Why Every Small Business Should Have a Website

Is your San Diego business one of the many small companies that is still going without? By that, we mean “going without a website.” The reality is, even though you may think you’re doing just fine as is, today every small business—whether it’s a neighborhood dry cleaner or car repair shop, a dentist’s office or a law firm—needs a business website.

Why do you need a website? First and foremost, customers go online to look for just about everything these days. Sure, there may be some people who still check out the Yellow Pages, but more and more people go to the online version of the Yellow Pages—search engines.

The growth of mobile devices such as tablet computers and phones is only accelerating the importance of websites. Now, consumers and business decision-makers alike are increasingly grabbing a mobile device when they’re out and about. If your San Diego restaurant doesn’t have a website, they won’t find out about you when they search for a place to eat lunch. If your nail salon doesn’t have a website, they won’t know you exist when they’re looking for a place to get a manicure.

Having a business website expands your company’s reach. Sure, your dry cleaning business might be getting lots of local customers who know about you because they drive by your shop every day. But think how many more you could get if people who don’t happen to drive by your store learned about it from an Internet search and went a little bit out of their way? Your business could double, triple or more.

Of course, if you sell products (or aspire to sell products) outside your local community, a business website with ecommerce capabilities gives you the option to expand regionally, nationally or even globally. Yes, selling internationally is simpler than you think with an ecommerce-enabled website.

But even if your aspirations aren’t that global, there are other reasons to have a website for your business. For one thing, today a website is seen as a badge of legitimacy for your business. Have you ever heard about a business, and then been unable to find it online? Especially if the company provides some type of professional service, such as contracting, accounting or consulting, you’d be leery of using a company with no Web presence behind it. A website, quite simply, makes customers and prospects feel comfortable with your business.

Launching a San Diego business website doesn’t have to take months or cost a lot of money. In fact, it can be done easily and affordably—and will pay off in many ways.
